Mermaid: The Woman on the Edge of the Sea

How was it that you left the oceans of spheres
to be amongst the violent towns of seafarers?

How did you live to break the water's surface,
only to walk upon such loveless barrenness?

Is this shape shifting? Is this how we lost you?
Is this the place of enchantment, my sister,
where the veils between the worlds grow thin?
For I see you, my mirror, when I look within.

The night that you left us the swallowing sea,
there was such an emptiness, that I sank into,
I could not escape the loss of this wreckage.

I wept amongst restless weeds of sunken ships
until the barnacles and oysters locked me in
to the treasureless skeletons of human kind.

Far above the empty caverns of my sunken self
the rock seal barked through the long still night,
until he became the low grey throat of grief.
So are we lost? Is this how our love will end?

The lightening oceans filled skies above the pain,
but you were gone, before the sun. You are gone.

Dawn rose across the vast pink shell of silence,
in golden beginnings, emptied of your loveliness,
the ships were rudderless, voiceless captains,
longing for your deep green harbours of passion.

How was it that you were captured by sailors,
and that your mournful song was also silenced?

For without my fear of mysteries beyond imaginings,
and without your beautiful sorrowing harp,
and without your murmuring, cliffs turn into shrines.

If indeed, you have forsaken the oceans of this time,
it was a fortunate moment for humanity, Celeste,
that one day, you appeared upon the shoreline of hope
and all the creatures of the deep began to stir
and awoke to afford you strength, upon your journey.

How did these civilisations attract such a being,
who had only been known through mythology?

How did our love survive, and henceforth proliferate
amongst humans, having no glimpse beyond surfaces?

It was only by a miracle that you came upon us.
I am your brother and I drift like the seahorse.

My grief, the tides, approaching, receding, my tears
in the face of this sad moon, a flooding searchlight.

I love you. Such is this attachment, that I am adrift
like a haunted ship, upon an ocean of rain clouds.
I will never be who I am, until we return to the sea.
