We saw him on the borders of our thoughts,
Surrounded by the worlds where he did not live.
He grew strong and wise half knowing of us.
He searched our many eyes for answers,
But they were old and filled with questions.
They were the sunlit paths of meadows,
Where he walked alone in search of us.
He was washed away in a trillion flowers,
As we distracted him like dragonflies.
We flashed our tiny lights into his eyes,
So that he began to dream of greater ways.
One morning he seemed to lose sight of us
And he wept forlorn into the sandy cliffs.
He said, "I will die of grief upon this stone
And I will feed the roots my tears of woe,
If you would not come into my heart now."
And we felt such tenderness for his ways,
That we wanted to take him by his thoughts
And lead him deep into our labyrinths,
Through doors of bark and mossy latches.
Vernon, you are stunned into love by alders
And you reach into your own reflections.
He cried, "Bring me home, I am one of you."
But we abide by the laws of the many worlds
And he must wander away of his own free will.
We entered the body of an owl and told him,
This darkness has come to develop your vision.
We saw him fall like a star and we sighed,
The way the tide comes in to claim the land.
Vernon, come away to the places you know
And be at peace with all your imaginings.
May the trees reclaim him and may he glisten,
Like spray of waterfalls amongst the leaves.
Vernon, a man of the land and many trees,
Your soul is a light in the world to behold.
You have a changeling heart and you know,
We are closer to you than you might think.
We reflect each other like mirrors here.
See us in the surface of the largest lakes
And hear us in the windy cries of birds
And in the eyes of all who live, we are there,
And follow us deep into the mountains
And into the forests and into the valleys
And into the rings of the laughter and dance
And hold us in your heart like jewels
And release them into the sky like stars
And let them shine to light all your paths.
When you believe your story will be sung,
You will awaken from your longest dream.
