CORAL HULL: POETRY INSPIRED BY THE LORD OF THE RINGS
HOBBITON: THE PERFECT CHILDHOOD
(V) The Discovery of the Ring
"Riddles in the Dark. My Precious. Precious ..." - Gandalf The Grey (Walsh & Boyens)
| |
The deep contemplation of Gandalf by the fire of BagEnd.
He is thinking a thousand cultures, languages, histories,
where none can follow - he travels like a wisp of smoke.
Riddles in the dark, riddles in the dark.
It has been done and said before, but not by you nor I.
He's gone ------ Dear Bilbo is gone to Rivendell.
He has thought for a long time about leaving.
Yet he could barely leave that ring behind.
It was as if in his heart, he had become as cold as it. |
| |
The burden is yours now Frodo.
It is handed to you - passed down.
If you don't take it - others will.
Those riddles in the dark ...
I am still unsure of what we have inherited.
Put it out of sight!
Keep it secret! Keep it safe!
Keep it hidden
and hide yourself!
For the world has changed ...
It is the world of burden we have inherited,
and if we don't save it, no one will.
*
The knowledge is passed down into the hearts
of all our perfect childhoods ...
This is your burden, your gift!
You thought that nothing bad
could enter your life ---
But evil endures, poor Frodo ---
The burden of evil endures ---
He's seeking it ----
He's seeking you ----
Evil yearns as well.
The darkness will seek to find you,
and it must never find you. |
| |
No-one knows it's here, do they?
Do they Gandalf?
I am sorry - poor Frodo -
The enemy has found you already!
The dark riders in the mist
have been released -
They are coming. They are coming.
Take it Gandalf - please release me.
Take it ---- you must ---- take it!
Don't tempt me Frodo.
I dare not take it.
Not even to keep it safe.
It is within your heart, my friend.
To take it I would bend your will.
To take it I would break your mind,
and the light that is in your heart. |
| |
Understand, Frodo. I would use this ring
with a desire to do good. But ...
Put it somewhere out of sight.
Question that need you have for it.
This wizard will neither be tempted
nor corrupted ...
The ring is powerful, Frodo.
It evenly rules all the gods of darkness.
But Gandalf what must I do?
You must leave Hobbiton!
They know you are here!
But what will I do ...?
Where will you be ...?
I'll be waiting at The Inn Of The Prancing Pony.
(There are no other answers now.)

Sometimes there is no time to think or dream.
Travel light and leave even your name behind,
as well as everything you knew, up until now
and start your walk towards the light, my friend,
into a tragedy greater than you have ever known,
and a life far more wonderful and treacherous
than you have ever dreamed of. All awaits you.
So leap into that unknown! My poor, dear friend.
*
This is the discovery of heroes -------
The gift of burden and responsibility.
The world has come to seek you out.
The ring wants a way back to Mordor.
Gandalf the wise - his eyes glazed over,
the tassled hair, the voice of trembling.
There was that knowing look of ages past.
There's nothing ... nothing ... but wait!
The language is that of Mordor,
which we shall not utter here.
The spirit of the Dark Lord lives!

Frodo, this whole world
is on the borders of war,
and sooner or later
it is coming to get you,
and you must learn
how to defend yourself.
That is the way
of Middle Earth ...
But Gandalf, I never wanted
any of this -
for it is simply not in
me ------- to be cruel.

| |
... Will it take me
far from home?
walking in those old hills
and under the starlight?
You were meant to find the ring.
You were meant to have this pain.
(Is that an encouraging thought?)
I think not, Gandalf ...
But my thoughts are no longer clear.
Oh Gandalf, since you have been away
I wonder about the wild lands,
the fire writing on the ring,
and strange visions of the mountains
come into all my dreams.

O Gandalf, we have talked long this day ...
What am I to do?
for now I am truly afraid.
Of course, my dear Frodo.
To rid yourself of the ring
will be dangerous for you,
and that troubles me deeply ...
You must find the cracks of Doom
in the depths of Orodrum, inside The Fire
Mountains, and cast the ring into it.
Leave everything as it was, and it will continue,
... and you will go far away.
Your name is no longer, you are now an Underhill.
So go, and leave the name of Baggins behind you.
Yes, you are leaving The Shire,
and that should not be known
... until you are far away. |
"You’ll have to leave the name of Baggins behind you, for that name is not safe outside the Shire. Travel only by day. And stay off the road." - Gandalf The Grey (Walsh and Boyens) |
