CORAL HULL: POETRY INSPIRED BY THE LORD OF THE RINGS
THE ELVES ARE LEAVING
"Wood elves! They're going to the harbour beyond the White Towers. The Grey Havens." - Frodo Baggins (Walsh & Boyens)

The Elves are passing westwards, radiant
through the moonlit woods, in the evening,
passing, forever passing, not returning,
for they are leaving Middle Earth, with
haunted grey eyes, in robes of silken light.
They say they are going to the harbour,
out away beyond the white towers,
beyond the western border of The Shire
to the emerald sea, to The Grey Havens,
where the blessed elven ships set sail
never to return here. So I am saddened.
For there are dwarves from far countries
red faced and wary, troubled by whispers,
that seem to come from trees and stone alike,
from the land of the eye, that never sleeps.
Orcs are multiplying in the mountain ranges.
Trolls are abroad ---- no longer dull witted,
but cunning and armed with dreadful weapons.
And there were murmured hints of creatures
more terrible than these, but they had no name. |
